The Xoloitzcuintle alebrije represents the belief in pre-Hispanic times that these beautiful dogs were guardians of the spirits and guided the souls of the dead through the difficult path of Mictlán, the city of the dead.
The most important function that the Xoloitzcuintles were believed to fulfill was to help souls pass through a deep and mighty river that crosses the land of the dead.
