La Catrina is an emblematic figure that is part of the ancestral traditions of Mexico such as the "Day of the Dead".

The figure was created by Guadalupe Posada and baptized by the muralist Diego Rivera.

In fact, La Catrina is a criticism of many poor Mexicans who want to appear to have a European lifestyle that does not correspond to them, that is represented in the skull that wears a wide-brimmed French-style hat with ostrich feathers. Diego Rivera was the one who presented her with her characteristic attire, when he captured her in his mural "Sueño de una tarde de Domingo en la Alameda Central" where the skull appears with its creator Guadalupe Posada and a child version of Rivera together with Frida Kahlo. It was precisely Diego Rivera who called her "La Catrina" a name that made her popular worldwide.

Eventually in Capula Michoacán, the plastic artist Juan Torres decides to mold the “Catrina” character of Posada in clay. Beginning in this way with a whole tradition of artisans in Capula who are dedicated to making clay catrinas.
